2026 Toyota RAV4 vs. 2026 Honda CR-V & CR-V Hybrid

Which is the best compact SUV?

The Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V are two of the most popular crossover SUVs on the market, and both have hybrid versions that have grown in popularity as well. Both vehicles offer Southern Pines new car buyers an excellent combination of practicality, fuel efficiency, and reliability. For 2026, the Toyota RAV4 has been completely redesigned and is now available exclusively as a hybrid. What does this mean for America’s best-selling SUV? Does it have what it takes to maintain that title over CR-V? Kelley Blue Book thinks so, as it already named the 2026 RAV4 its compact SUV best buy for 2026.

What’s new for the 2026 RAV4?

Everything! The 2026 RAV4 is all-new and has gone hybrid only in every trim. Now in its 6th generation, the RAV4 is offered in hybrid or plug-in hybrid (PHEV) forms, and with front- or all-wheel-drive; FWD is newly available for the RAV4 hybrid. A multitude of trims are available making it easy to find the one that fits your personality and budget. Styling is new inside and out, and new versions of Toyota Safety Sense and Toyota Audio Multimedia system are launched with the all-new RAV4.

What do the RAV4 Hybrid and CR-V Hybrid cost?

To start, the 2026 RAV4 starts at a much lower base price than CR-V Hybrid, about $3700 less. Fuel economy is also much higher in the Toyota, as the RAV4 is rated up to an EPA estimated 48 mpg city/42 mpg highway/44 mpg combined. This is much higher than CR-V Hybrid’s max of 43/36/40, respectively.

Even if you aren’t set on a hybrid, you’ll still enjoy the cost of ownership savings. You may be surprised to learn that the base RAV4 LE is also close in price to the base gas CR-V LX. The small premium for the RAV4 will quickly repay itself in cost of ownership thanks to the higher fuel economy as RAV4 FWD LE is rated for an estimated 44 mpg combined vs. CR-V FWD LX’s 30 MPG combined. And RAV4 LE includes many features standard that require moving up to higher trim levels on CR-V, like alloy wheels and rear privacy glass.

Verdict: The new hybrid 2026 Toyota RAV4 offers better overall value, thanks to its lower starting price, additional features, and better fuel economy against CR-V.

How do the RAV4 Hybrid and CR-V Hybrid perform?

As mentioned, the 2026 RAV4 gets better fuel economy than any CR-V. Hybrids don’t only save money at the pump, however: they also make for spirited performance in daily driving. Here the RAV4 also outshines CR-V, featuring a combined system horsepower rating of 226 on FWD models (236 on AWD) from its hybrid powertrain. CR-V has 190 hp on its standard gas engine and gets a combined system horsepower rating of 204 from its hybrid powertrain.

Verdict: The Toyota RAV4 offers superior performance, with more horsepower and economy.

What features does the RAV4 Hybrid offer?

Despite its lower starting price, RAV4 comes standard with features that are optional, more expensive, or not even available on any Honda CR-V or CR-V Hybrid. While both feature touchscreen infotatainment systems with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the RAV4 offers much more than the CR-V in terms of technology. For 2026, CR-V added a standard 9″ touchscreen infotainment system, but 2026 RAV4 upsized to a 10.5″ touchscreen display. SiriusXM Satellite Radio with 360L is also standard on RAV4, while not available on any CR-V. The instrument cluster is a 12.3″ display on RAV4, while CR-V includes a 7″ display with 10.2″ available.

RAV4 also offers other creature comforts CR-V does not offer. Ventilated front seats are useful in hot Carolina summers – they are optional on Toyota RAV4 but not available on any Honda CR-V. When winter comes back around, rear passengers can enjoy available heated rear seats in RAV4 – but not in CR-V. A panoramic power moonroof is another luxurious feature available on the RAV4, filling the already airy cabin with more light. No CR-V offers a panoramic moonroof at any price.

Every RAV4 features Toyota Safety Sense™ technology as standard across all trims. This suite of safety features includes pre-collison system with pedestrian detection, lane-departure alert, and dynamic radar cruise control. RAV4 Hybrid also offers a 360-degree Panoramic View Monitor that lets you see around the vehicle and is helpful for parking in tight spaces. CR-V Hybrid doesn’t offer a comparable feature.

Verdict: The Toyota RAV4 provides a more comfortable and technologically advanced interior, making it the superior choice for the challenges of everyday driving.

Which small hybrid SUV is the best choice?

While the Honda CR-V is a strong contender among family crossovers, the totally redesigned 2026 Toyota RAV4 continues to be the gold standard for small SUVs and cements that role with its newly standard hybrid powertrain. With its extra power AND fuel efficiency, more advanced features, and lower starting price, it blends more of what Aberdeen drivers and families want in a value-packed driving experience. And that value continues in RAV4’s cost of ownership, with complimentary ToyotaCare included on every new Toyota, giving you no-charge scheduled maintenance in the first 2 years or 25,000 miles, whichever comes first. This is longer than Honda’s included 1 year/12,000 miles.

It’s no wonder Kelley Blue Book has named Toyota the best overall brand in resale value for 8 of the last 9 years. And for even more peace of mind in your ownership experience, Pinehurst Toyota in Southern Pines goes further with the Advantage Plan.
